BAM is the authority responsible for type testing packagings subject to approval for the transport of radioactive materials on the basis of the corresponding traffic regulatory principles, for example according to ADR, chapter 6.4. In performing this task, the BAM follows Guideline R003:

The quality assurance method used depends on the Technische Richtlinie über Maßnahmen zur Qualitätssicherung (QM) und -überwachung (QÜ) für Verpackungen zur Beförderung radioaktiver Stoffe - TRV 006 -, published by the Federal Ministry for Transport:

Monitoring of quality assurance measures for designing, manufacturing, testing, documenting and inspecting packagings subject to approval for radioactive materials is performed in compliance with ADR, chapter 6.4, in conjunction with ADR, section 1.7.3.

The safety engineering assessments required within the framework of the type tests are performed by members of staff of BAM Working Group 3.32 - Transport containers for radioactive materials. These assessments include tests with respect to

BAM’s field of activity is intensified through scientific safety studies of the existing problems processed by us.

Tests with respect to screening and criticality of the radioactive content are the responsibility of BfS

BAM is the German authority responsible for type testing and for approving special form radioactive materials in compliance with ADR, section 5.1.5.3.1, in conjunction with ADR subsection 6.4.

Check list for application documents and design-type quality assurance programs (QAP) for assessing enclosed radioactive materials (radiation sources), particularly as special form radioactive materials) issued by BAM serves the applicant as a guideline for the content and the scope of documents to be forwarded to BAM for the application of an approval:
